Xiaoyu (Rayne) Zheng

Prof. Xiaoyu (Rayne) Zheng 's group at the University of California, Berkeley, draws principles from mechanics, optics and material science to develop the next generation of additive manufacturing (3D printing) processes, material design and synthesis approaches to create multi-functional materials and all-in-one devices with controlled 3D architectures, compositions and multi-scale features. Our research builds at the interface between machine and materials. We actively transfer these materials to a wide array of applications for electronics, structures, robotics, energy storage and transduction, to biology and health care. Currently  our group have several research focuses:

1) Materials and Multi-material Additive Fabrication Technologies for Highly Responsive Functional Materials (combinations of piezoelectric, dielectric and conductive Materials)

2) AI powered discovery of metamaterial architecturse with prescribed behaviors (energy absorptions, ferroelectric and dynamic behaviors)

3) Advanced sensors, transducers and robotic materials enabled by 1) and 2)

Our work on scalable additive manufacturing approaches for ultralight, ultrastrong and resilient materials was featured on MIT Technology Review Top 10 Innovations, the Cover on Science Magazine and Nature Materials.  Before his faculty career, Rayne obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Boston University, MA and subsequently worked as a research engineer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
